SELECTOR VERSION 5.0
The SELECTOR project is an ongoing series of physical and/or virtual multimedia installations. In Jamaica, beginning in the 1960's, the most important role at parties was that of the Selector, so named because he/she carefully selected the records to be played, with continuity of rhythm and the ebb and flow of the party at their control. This role predates the contemporary concept of the DJ. In this social context the Selector/DJ symbolically becomes both griot and shaman- a mythic figure that is responsible for representing collective memory through creating a narrative. The medium of this narrative is music.
